Director of Management Board of Investment projects on construction of agricultural and rural development works in Ben Tre province (the investor of the project compensation component), Mr. Nguyen Van Dien said that the unit has signed a contract with Provincial Land Fund Development Centre to perform site clearance compensation.
Up to now, the Centre has made a detailed plan to perform site clearance compensation for 4 early started sluice gates of Tan Phu, Ben Ro, Thu Cuu and Cai Quao.
In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced a 2020 capital plan for the site clearance and compensation component of VND 40 billion for the four above-mentioned sluices.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dien said that due to the recent drought situation, especially severe this year, local authorities and people are very supportive of the project and have a strong determination to make compensation, ground clearance to ensure the progress of the project.
According to the plan, it is expected that the province will hand over the construction ground to 4 sluice gates, including Tan Phu and Ben Ro in October 2020, Thu Cuu and Cai Quao in February 2021. The remaining sluices include An Hoa, Ben Tre, Vam Nuoc Trong and Vam Thom will be built at the end of 2021.
According to Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, the Ben Tre Water Management project funded by the Japanese Government (JICA3) has been implemented in Chau Thanh, Binh Dai, Giong Trom, Mo Cay Bac and Mo Cay Nam districts, Ben Tre city.
The project consists of two Components: Component of compensation, site clearance and resettlement, which is invested by the Project Management Board of Agricultural and Rural Development Projects in Ben Tre province; Component of design, construction of project items invested by the Investment and Irrigation Management Board 9.
The objective of the project is to enhance protection and the use of water resources to ensure agricultural production and the lives of people in the project area, so as not to be threatened by saltwater intrusion due to climate change, sea level rise, and over-exploitation of the upper Mekong.

The main project items include 8 sluices and 4 lock docks combined with sluices, such as: Tan Phu sluices, pumping station and bridges over sluice; Ben Ro sewer and bridge over sluice; Thu Cuu sluice and bridge over the sluice; Cai Quao sluice and bridge over sluice; combined sewer with Ben Tre boat lock and bridge across the drain; combined sewer with An Hoa lock and bridge across the drain; Vam Nuoc Trong sluice combined with lock and bridge over sluice; Vam Thom sluice combined with lock and bridge over sluice.
The Ben Tre Water Management Project will prevent high tides and cope with rising sea levels; prevent and control saltwater intrusion for 204,270 ha of natural land in 9 districts and Ben Tre city.
The project also takes initiative in collecting water, draining water, collecting alluvium, acidifying soil, washing alum for agricultural production and aquaculture for about 110,442 hectares of agricultural land out of a total of 137,224 hectares of Ben Tre province, according to directions to diversify plants and animals. A total of 207,275 households will benefit from the project.
In addition, the project also improves the water environment; creating population distribution areas and combining waterway transportation, forming a continuous waterway transportation network in the region. At the same time, the project also builds and strengthens an integrated surface water management system for Ben Tre province.
