On April 29, 2021, Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control - Mr. Tran Quang Hoai and leaders of a number of Departments under the Viet Nam Disaster Management Authority (VNDMA-Central Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control) welcomed and worked with the Mission of the US Embassy in Vietnam led by Colonel Thomas M. Stevenson, Senior Defense Official and Defense Attache to Vietnam, US Embassy to discuss cooperation between the two sides in the field of disaster risk reduction management in the coming time. Joining the mission were Mr. Wei J. Yuan, Chief of Defense Cooperation Office; Major Colonel Adam R. Lulay, Bilateral Affairs Officer from the US Office of Defence Cooperation and Ms. Linden Dahlkemper, Coast Guard of the US Office of Defence Cooperation, and representatives of the United States Development Cooperation (USAID) in Vietnam.



Opening the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, VNDMA General Director - Mr. Tran Quang Hoai thanked the US Embassy for always paying attention to and supporting Vietnam in the field of natural disasters risk management, especially in the works of prevention, control and overcoming of consequences of storm No. 09 and flood in the Central region in 2020.

With the support of the US Government in general and the US Embassy in Vietnam in particular, the following DRM activities are under good progress, including capacity building for the in-charge staff; support activities of the US Navy in the construction of the Working Offices of the Provincial Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue in a number of provinces and cities; disaster recovery activities by USAID and many other technical cooperation activities for capacity building and disaster risk reduction in Vietnam.

At the meeting, Mr. Tran Quang Hoai wished the United States to continue promoting and building a support program for the prevention, fighting and reduction of natural disaster risks in Vietnam through capacity building training for the forces at all levels; and support with advanced equipment for the National Disaster Prevention and Control Center which will soon be operated in the near future.
 
Directly at the meeting, Mr. Tran Quang Hoai also introduced to the Mission of the US Embassy the natural disaster monitoring system and the 24 hour duty Disaster Response Department of the Central Steering Committee Standing Office. The representative of the US Embassy was very impressed and praised the technical advances in natural disaster risk monitoring of Vietnam.
 
 
At the end of the meeting, Colonel Stevenson, Senior Defense Official and Defense Attache to Vietnam, US Embassy pledged to continue to accompany Vietnam in the prevention and recovery of natural disaster consequences, and hope for a new stage of cooperation between Vietnam and the United States, especially in the field of natural disaster risk reduction and management.
