In 2018, natural disasters were not as intense and fierce as in 2017, but it has many extremes as well as anomalies across the country, and it occurs earlier and ends later compared to the forecast from the forecast agency.

I. QUANTITY OF NATURE DISASTER

In 2018, Vietnam suffered from 16 over 21 types of natural disasters, including 09 storms, 05 tropical depressions, 213 thunderstorms, electrical storms, 18 flash floods, landslides (especially in Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Son La, Thanh Hoa provinces), 07 dangerous winds over the ocean, 05 damaging cold spells at the upstream of the Mekong River, the Central region, high tide in the Southern provinces, landslides at river bank, central coast and Mekong Delta erosion, etc.

II. NATURAL DISASTER DAMAGES

Under the direction of the Government leaders, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has decreased the damages caused by natural disasters in 2018 compared to recent years, information as below:
- Damages to People: 224 died and missing (92 died and missing due to flood (accounting for 41%), 82 died and missing due to flash floods, landslides (accounting for 37%), 50 died and missing caused by other types of natural disasters (accounting for 22%)).

- Damages to houses: 1,987 collapsed and swept away; 112,998 flooded, damaged and relocated urgently;

- Damages to agriculture:

+ 267,801 ha of rice and crops flooded, lost, 43,278 ha of industrial crops, fruit trees fell and broken;

+ 30,228 cattle and 781,643 poultry died; 12,740 hectares of aquaculture are damaged;
- 1,012 km of dykes, embankments, and canals were landslide; nearly 89 km of river and coastline was eroded; over 8.4 million cubic meters of national highways, provincial roads and rural roads were damaged.
Total economic losses are estimated at nearly VND20,000 billion (approximately 1/3 of the loss in 2017). Damage to people and property due to natural disasters in 2018 is low compared to the average of many years, especially in recent years.

III. RECOVERY FROM NATURAL DISASTER (AT CENTRAL LEVEL)
Recovery and reconstruction after natural disasters has also been implemented in a positive and timely manner. The Central Steering Committee and ministries have advised the Prime Minister to support localities with VND 7,780 billion in overcoming the damages of natural disasters as following:
VND 1,480 billion for emergency recovery of livelihood and essential infrastructure after major natural disasters in 2018;

VND 6,300 billion and USD 36 million (ODA) for emergency restoration of dyke projects, prevention of landslides in Mekong Delta, coastal erosion and sedimentation at the Central river mouth;

Support to urgent relocate 5,495 households that damages by floods, flash floods, landslides in 13 provinces.
