Millions of Texans faced power outages last week trying to stay warm in the terrible cold of historic blizzards, but those lucky enough to have electricity to use them suffer from bad news.

A man in Texas has received an electricity bill of up to $ 17,000 (equivalent to 395 million VND), 300 times higher than normal. The cold has made the demand for electricity reach its peak while power supplies have fallen due to the shutdown of gas, wind or solar power plants when they are not designed to cope with inclement weather.

This reminds us of the summer of 2020 in Vietnam when the hot sun is at its peak, many people have coalized when electricity bills increased 2 to 3 times. When the demand for electricity soared to exceed the capacity available to low-cost power sources, we must purchase high-priced sources to compensate for the capacity shortage. This has led to the escalation in electricity prices. Last year, EVN sometimes had to buy a DO oil-fired power source with prices up to VND 5,500 / kwh (excluding VAT and transmission costs). In Texas, electricity prices in some places amounted to $9/kwh, an increase of 7,400%.

It can be seen that the heat crisis caused by the cold in Texas or the high heat in Vietnam has led to a sudden increase in the electricity demand of the people while the limited supply will push the electricity price sky high. So, in preparation for a new hot season that is about to begin, let's save electricity now and prepare a plan to cope when the electricity crisis strikes.
