Five provinces under emergency conditions due to saltwater intrusion will be supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, including Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Kien Giang and Ca Mau. Each province will be supported VND 800 million through the Vietnam Environment Protection Fund to solve daily-life and production water.

The mission of the Central Steering Committee presented water tanks to people in the Mekong Delta.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has just sent documents to 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region on supporting the settlement of domestic water to combat drought and saltwater intrusion.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the situation of drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion this year occurred on a large scale, stretching from the North, Central and Central Highlands, especially the Mekong Delta. According to forecasts, in the upcoming time, drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta is expected to continue for some time and much more complicated and unpredictable.

In the long term, due to the impacts of climate change, sea level rise and increasing demand for water, especially the increase in exploitation and use of water in the upstream areas, the risk of drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion can occur more frequently and more severely.

In order to proactively prevent and combat drought, water shortage, saltwater intrusion, and ensure water sources for production, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment requires provinces to continue to closely monitor and constantly update, report, forecast the situation of meteorological, hydrological, drought and saltwater water intrusion in order for the Ministry to take initiative in implementing production plans.

Provinces need to study and effectively use documents and results of the groundwater survey, search, observation, forecast and warning data on water resources approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and transfer to localities to implement measures to prevent and combat drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion. Especially, to ensure the supply of daily-life water for people in areas facing serious water shortages.

In addition, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will set up a Task Force to assist localities in investigating and seeking fresh water sources for domestic water supply. The Ministry also asked the People's Committees of provinces and cities to review, evaluate and propose concentrated population areas lacking domestic water, which should be given urgent priority so that the Ministry can deploy supply sites, promptly provide to the people in the current urgent period.

At the same time, the Ministry has appointed focal units to receive exploitation wells for investment and construction of concentrated water supply works.
