On July 1, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the German Development Cooperation Agency GIZ held a meeting on the implementation of Phase 2 of the Project "The Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Programme (MCRP)”. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep chaired the meeting.



The project “The Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Programme (MCRP)” is a cooperative development project funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Swiss Federation and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The overall objective of the project is: Improve the management of land, water and mangrove forests in the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta in order to adapt to climate change for sustainable development of the region. The project is authorized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Swiss Federal Economic Service (SECO) and implemented jointly by the German Development Cooperation Organization (GIZ) with the General Department of Economic Cooperation and Development and Vietnam Disaster Management Agency (VNDMA), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

 

Mr. Christop Klinnert – Project Lead Advisor presented the contents of the components in Phase 2, specifically:

  • Component 1: Establishing an institutional framework to promote linkages in the development of the Mekong Delta to adapt to climate change. Component 2: Improving investment planning at the regional level for urban and rural water management to adapt to climate change with gender equality mainstreaming.
  • Component 3: Applying new, innovative and appropriate technological solutions to combat coastal erosion, thereby strengthening the capacity to adapt to climate change for rural infrastructures and ecosystems .
  • Component 4: Implementation of climate-adaptive water-related urban infrastructure.

Accordingly, Phase 2 of the project will be supplemented with funding with a total funding of: 11.35 million Euro. In which, the contributions in the next phase include: The German Government is 5,000,000 Euro, 6,300,000 Euro co-financed from SECO, 50,000 Euro funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep highly appreciated the project's efforts and contributions to the Mekong Delta region. The Deputy Minister suggested that GIZ work closely with VNDMA (project owner) to soon implement the procedures for submission for approval so that Phase 2 of the project can be implemented on schedule.
