Da Nang city, 24-25 June 2024, Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is Vietnam's national disaster prevention agency assigned to be the focal point in the APEC Emergency Response Working Group (EPWG), coordinating with the APEC Secretariat organize the EPWG Workshop on "Strengthening Early Warning Early Action for the Vulnerable Communities in APEC" aims to share professional and technical information in natural disaster risk management among APEC economies.



 

According to the United Nations (UN), over the past 50 years, there have been more than 11,000 weather, climate and water-related disasters that have killed more than 2 million people. Early warning early action is considered to be our main strategy for minimizing the impact of natural disasters, however, is facing challenges. In order to proactively minimize damage, it is necessary to have discussions on anticipatory action.

Therefore, the theme of Early Warning and Early Action has been responded to by the United Nations and many research and forecasting organizations around the world as a consistent direction in recent years to raise awareness of countries. on warning, forecasting and preparing to respond to natural disasters.

Realizing that one of the biggest challenges of ensuring APEC's sustainable economic and social development is minimizing natural disaster risks, the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is Vietnam's national disaster prevention agency assigned to be the focal point in the APEC Emergency Response Working Group (EPWG), coordinating with the APEC Secretariat organize the EPWG Workshop on "Strengthening Early Warning Early Action for the Vulnerable Communities in APEC" aims to share professional and technical information in natural disaster risk management among APEC economies.


Session 1: Trends and impacts of natural disasters in the context of climate change

The workshop was attended by representatives from the VDDMA (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), representatives of disaster management agencies from APEC economies (Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Malaysia) and with the participation of representatives of relevant agencies and non-governmental organizations.


Session 2:  Challenges and Gaps in Early Warning Early Action

The Workshop took place over 2 days from 24-25 June, 2024, with many speeches sharing experiences and lessons from domestic and international delegates through discussion sessions with the following topics:

The conference is an opportunity for delegates from APEC economies, relevant organizations and research agencies to share lessons learned and their valuable insights in the implementation process to effectively implement policies and activities on Early Warning and early action to contribute to building a stronger APEC community against the impacts of natural disasters.
