On September 19, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in collaboration with the Australian Government opened the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 (APMCDRR) in Australia.



The Vietnamese delegation attended the conference led by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Nguyen Hoang Hiep. Participating in the delegation were the Director General of the VietNam Disaster Management Authority (VNDMA) - Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Tran Quang Hoai; together with representatives of relevant units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and VNDMA.

APMCDRR 2022 is the 9th conference to be held from September 19 to 22, with the main theme being “From Crisis to Resilience: Toward the Future of the Asia-Pacific region through Disastẻ risk reduction”. In addition, 03 cross-cutting themes include: Diversity and inclusion; localization; science, technology and knowledge. The conference was attended by approximately 3,000 delegates from government, ministerial, local, private, academia and civil society levels, through face-to-face and online formats.


Within the framework of the 3-day program, more than 3,000 delegates from more than 40 countries in the Asia-Pacific region focused on discussing issues such as: Exchanging progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework, promoting efforts comprehensive disaster risk reduction force at the local level, aiming to lead less developed countries, archipelagos and small states in the region to join in responding to and encourage public investment of private sector to disaster risk reduction. The results of the Conference were summed up with the "Brisbane Declaration" (01 ministerial statement) to demonstrate the resolve of leaders in the area of ​​disaster risk reduction of Asia-Pacific leaders.

 

In his speech at the plenary session of the conference, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep said: Currently, Vietnam has been actively participating in cooperation mechanisms on disaster risk reduction, responsible implementation agreements on international cooperation. In particular, Vietnam assumes the position of Chairman of the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management next year 2023. Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep affirmed Vietnam's commitment to acting as an effective bridge, promoting strong cooperation between ASEAN and countries in the Asia-Pacific region on strategic solutions for multiple risks at once.

 

Regarding the proposal to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep said that the United Nations should further strengthen support for the most vulnerable countries in Asia - Pacific to enhance access to multilateral and global funds. Resources to be mobilized for programs and projects should focus on strengthening the resilience of the most vulnerable communities to the increasing impacts of disasters and climate change. In Vietnam, overcoming its vulnerability to natural disasters and climate change requires more efforts and resources, including the transfer of science and technology between countries.
