A heavy rainstorm hit Thai Nguyen on the night of June 29, causing severe urban flooding across key streets in the city center, with water depths ranging from 30 to 50 cm - and in some areas exceeding 1 meter - paralyzing traffic and disrupting daily life.
The downpour, lasting nearly two hours, led to major street inundations. According to Vrain’s specialized rainfall monitoring system, multiple northern provinces recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm during the night, including Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, and Phu Tho.
In Thai Nguyen, the intense rainfall in such a short period overwhelmed the city’s drainage capacity, leading to widespread flooding. On-site reports showed several streets submerged in water over a meter deep. Many cars stalled in the floodwaters, with some nearly fully submerged. Water also entered residential homes, severely affecting daily activities.
According to Thai Nguyen’s Hydro-Meteorological Station, flood depths across downtown areas ranged from 0.3 to 0.5 meters, with the deepest reaching beyond 1 meter.
This is not the first time Thai Nguyen has experienced severe flooding this monsoon season. Just a week prior, another heavy rainstorm inundated 19 wards and communes. More than 100 households in Thai Nguyen and Song Cong cities were forced to evacuate to avoid damage.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported rainfall in several parts of Thai Nguyen from 8 to 9 p.m. on June 29, including 46.8 mm in Quan Chu township (Dai Tu district) and 45.6 mm in Binh Son (Song Cong city).
Looking ahead, the center forecasts more heavy rainfall across northern Vietnam from the morning of June 30 through the night of July 1, with widespread rainfall between 70 to 150 mm, and localized extremes over 300 mm. Intense rainfall exceeding 100 mm within three hours is also possible in some areas.
Additionally, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces are expected to see scattered showers and thunderstorms on June 30, with rainfall ranging from 10 to 30 mm, and isolated areas exceeding 50 mm, particularly in the evening and overnight.
