The tropical depression intensified into a storm yesterday with international name: Surigae

The tropical depression east of Mindanao has intensified into a storm and may further strengthen into a typhoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Surigae is passing southwest of Yap. Surigae is drifting to the north-northwest. Surigae is in a highly favorable setting for development and will continue to strengthen and will likely become a severe tropical storm on Thursday. Surigae is expected to become the first typhoon of 2021 in the western Pacific by the weekend.

The track of Surigae will have to be closely monitored as it could at least threaten or brush the eastern Philippines Saturday night, local time, into early next week. In the Philippines, Surigae will also be known as Bising.
