On the morning of January 25 (the Lunar New Year's 1st Day), Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Standing Deputy Chairman of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, visited Bac Kan province to get a grasp on the situation and solutions to overcome damage caused by hail occurred from noon and night January 24, affecting the lives of thousands of households in Bac Kan province.

According to reports of localities, from noon 24 January to 9:30pm of the same day, there were 3 hailstorms in Bac Kan province, causing great damage to people's houses and crops, directly affected people's life, especially on New Year's Eve of 2020. About 2,542 people's houses have roof damage, the level of damage is over 50% in the following districts: Na Ri with 54 damaged houses, Bach Thong with 388 damaged houses, Ngan Son with 1,659 damaged houses, Cho Don with 25 houses, Cho Moi with 416 houses.

Immediately after the disaster occurred, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Provincial Steering Committee of Natural Disaster Prevention and Search/Rescue and the leaders of some departments and branches had directly checked and directed the remedial work in Bach Thong district, and at the same time, on the night of January 24, an emergency meeting was held to discuss solutions to ensure stability of people's lives during Tet holiday. In the long term, to stabilize accommodation and ensure safety, it is necessary to replace and repair the roof with corrugated iron. The cost for re-constructing 2,542 roofs is estimatedly about VND30 billion.

The People's Committee of Bac Kan province has asked the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control to consider the situation and report to the Prime Minister to support about VND30 billion for Bac Kan province to immediately overcome the consequences of hail and soon stabilize the accommodation of 2,542 households above.

At the meeting, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong instructed Bac Kan province to mobilize all forces on the spot, urgently overcome the consequences of hail; not to let any households without a home to celebrate Tet. It is necessary to have very specific statistics so as not to miss any damaged houses, supporting firstly with canvases, then corrugated iron to make the roof more durable and resistant to hail.
