In a statement, the Indonesian Volcano Monitoring Authority said the wind was blowing in the west side of the crater and warned locals not to go into the area 3 km away from the crater.

Because the ash eruption threatens aviation safety, A volcano observatory notice for aviation with red code is given. This is the highest level, all flights are prohibited from crossing air near the volcano.

Located on the main island of Java, Merapi volcano is about 2,930 m high, is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia and began to operate regularly from 1548. From September last year, this volcano has erupted 14 times.

The 2.930-metre high Mount Merapi last erupted on April 2, leading to an orange code aviation warning (the second highest level). During the Merapi eruption in October / November 2010, a total of 353 people were killed and about 350,000 others were evacuated. This is the worst eruption of Merapi since 1930, the time when the volcano "woke up" and killed about 1,300 people.

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of uncertainty about seismic activity, Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes or volcanic eruptions./.
