Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hail on afternoon and evening January 24 and 25, 2020 has caused damage at 06 provinces (Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho and Son La) ; Provinces of Vinh Phuc, Hoa Binh, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh and Ninh Binh also experienced heavy rain and hail, but no damage information has been available yet.



Hail and thunderstorms caused 12,002 houses to be partially damaged, including roofs, of which:

  • Cao Bang: 6,463 houses (13 houses with 30-50% damage; 6,450 houses with broken bricks, minor damage)
  • Bac Kan: 3,450 houses partially damaged roofs
  • Lang Son: 2,000 houses slightly damaged (initial statistics)

Other provinces:

  • Thai Nguyen: 01 house, 01 school site affected
  • Son La: 80 houses
  • Phu Tho: 08 houses.

Affected crops: 146ha of crops were damaged:

  • Bac Kan: 105 ha
  • Cao Bang: 36 ha
  • Son La: 5 ha

After the disaster, local authorities mobilized local forces to assist the affected households to quickly overcome and temporarily repair the damaged for Tet (most of the households were partially damaged).

The Office of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control requested the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search/Rescue to continue overcome the consequences caused by thunderstorms, cyclones and hail, and closely monitor the occurrance of thunderstorms, cyclones, hail and cold air; as well as communicate to all levels of authorities and people to take the initiative prevention action.

Right in the morning of January 25 (1st Day of Lunar New Year), the Mission of the Central Steering Committee led by the Deputy Chairman - Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong directly went to Bac Kan to direct the remedial works to ensure stability of people's lives during Tet holiday.
