Chinese media reported on June 11 that dozens of people were killed by heavy rains that caused floods and landslides in the South of the country.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management said floods affected about 2.63 million people in 11 provincial areas. Heavy rain forced 228,000 people displaced, more than 1,300 houses were destroyed and caused direct economic damage of more than Yuan 4 billion (about USD 566 million).

According to Xinhua, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Guangxi Province Emergency Management Department confirmed that six people were killed and one missing after days of heavy rain.

According to the local government of Yangshuo District (Yangshuo), a famous tourist spot, floods have suddenly forced residents and tourists to evacuate. More than 1,000 hotels were flooded to more than 1 meter due to rain, 5,000 shops were flooded and more than 30 tourist sites were destroyed.

As of June 9, an estimated 1.3 million people were affected by floods, of which 195,800 were evacuated to safety.

Extreme weather has severely affected the region's tourism industry, which is struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Hunan Province, central China, at least 13 people were killed in catastrophes caused by heavy rain. An estimated 321,000 people in 21 districts and towns in Hunan Province were affected by prolonged heavy rains, while 11,000 people were evacuated and received support.

Since June 2, heavy rains have poured across much of southern China. The water level of 110 rivers in many provinces has risen to dangerous levels.

The authorities in Guangdong, Guizhou and Jiangxi provinces have been mass-evacuating. In Guangdong Province, more than 20,000 were evacuated after heavy rains.

China National Meteorological Center forecasts rainstorms will continue in the next few days in the south, in some areas of Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Chongqing, Quy Zhou, Guangxi and Heilongjiang.
