A magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocked northeastern Japan on September 12, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The Kyodo news agency quoted the Japan Meteorological Agency as saying that the quake occurred at 11:44 am local time, with the epicenter located at a depth of about 40km off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. The earthquake is classified as Level 4 on Japan's 7-level earthquake scale in Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.

There is currently no information on casualties or damage caused by the earthquake./.
